This Friday, May 1st, marks Digital Wellness Day, a special day dedicated to understanding and fostering healthy relationships with technology. It's a day to pause, reflect, and take action on how we can help our children navigate the digital world with confidence, responsibility, and balance.
As a Digital Wellness Educator, I’ve spent years researching and teaching families and schools how to approach screen time and digital life in a healthy, positive way (without fear based tactics). I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming it can be to navigate the ever-evolving world of technology, especially for parents and educators of tweens and teens. But the truth is, it doesn't have get to the point of overwhelming.
Digital Wellness is MUCH More Than Just Limits
It’s not just about setting screen time limits or blocking apps, it's about empowering our kids to make smart decisions, communicate safely, and balance their online and offline lives. The goal is for them to thrive in the digital world, not just survive it, and for us to be by their side with open and judgement free communication. Opinionated books will come and go (if you want some balanced ones suggested, reach out), research will look at what it wants to (unless you know where to look for good, unbiased research), but digital wellness and media literacy skills will last through it all, no matter what is happening and who is saying what.
That’s where I come in. Over the years, I’ve developed a wealth of resources to help families, educators, and communities better understand digital wellness and media literacy. Whether it’s tools for teaching your kids and students about boundaries, guides for navigating the online world together, or strategies for fostering healthy habits, I’ve got you covered.
New Resources for Digital Wellness Day This Year
This year, I've created two kits, one for families and one for schools.
Parents:
If your child's school is doing a Digital Wellness Day, there is a free family kit to go along with it at home. It is built around a simple framework: Notice, Try, Reflect. No lectures, no rules, just a few prompts and activities to help your family have a real conversation about how technology actually feels in your daily life. Whether you have a seven-year-old or a fifteen-year-old, it is designed to meet your family where you are.
Schools:
The Digital Wellness Day Activities Bundle is a K-12 school-wide kit designed to make Digital Wellness Day or Week simple to run and meaningful for every grade. It includes four grade-banded lesson packs, a full implementation guide, staff resources, and a morning announcement script, all built around the Notice, Try, Reflect framework. It is calm, practical, and non-shaming by design, because students do not need another lesson about what is wrong with their phones. They need space to notice, reflect, and choose one small thing to try.
Now is the Time!
As parents and educators, we have a big role to play in helping our kids understand the complexities of the digital world. Digital Wellness Day serves as a reminder that we can’t afford to wait. It’s never too early or too late to start teaching your kids how to manage their online lives in a balanced, thoughtful way.
Happy Digital Wellness Day!
